Rectal Prolapse
Rectal Prolapse is relatively uncommon. Ther rectum looses its attachments to the sacral pelvis and subsequently protrudes out the anus. The longer this condition is present the more chance for fecal incontinence.
The Altemeir procedure is usually prefered for higher risk elderly patients. This operation is a very safe operation with minimal discomfort. It is performed via the rectum. The prolapsing bowel is pulled through and removed. The bowel is sutured back together. Recurrence approaches 10-15%. Hospitalization is around 3-4 days.
Presacral Rectopexy is usually done in younger individuals and is in an abdominal approach. This frequently is done laparoscopically. Occasionally resection of the sigmoid colon is indicated. Recurrence is around 5% with somewhat better control opposed to the Altemeir procedure.
